FIREARM SAFETY COURSE

MONARO ARMS SAFETY COURSE  (for ACT residents only)

The Monaro Arms Safety course is for categories A & B for the purpose of sport target shooting & recreational hunting.

The course runs from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm every second Tuesday evening and is $80 per adult and $60 for juniors(12 – 18 years). All juniors must be accompanied by an adult. Payment must be made when registering for the course online.

Participants must download and read the Monaro Arms Safety Course Booklet and download and complete the Monaro Arms ACT Pre Safety Course Qualification/Application form prior to attending the course. These files will be automatically sent to you after booking your session.

The course consists of a practical element and participants must pass a theory test at the end of the course.

The course is based on demonstrating two units of the minimum national competency:

  • Understanding Firearms – about a firearms owner’s legal, social and personal safety responsibilities; and
  • Using Firearms Safely – about possessing, handling and using safely.

Please note that successful completion of the course does not guarantee the granting of an ACT Firearms Licence and a person applying for a firearms licence for the first time is required to undergo a police check.

HOW TO APPLY FOR AN ACT LONGARMS FIREARMS LICENCE

ACT has firearm laws to protect public safety and promote the responsible and safe use of firearms.

Applicants for a new ACT Firearms Licence (category A & B) must successfully complete an approved course in Firearm Safety in the 12-month period ahead of the date when they wish to lodge their application. Monaro Arms offers courses that meet the requirement for an ACT Licence. Register for the course HERE.

In addition there are a number of requirements an applicant must meet to apply for a firearms licence.

The applicant must:

  •  provide genuine reasons for having a firearms licence (See ACT Firearms Registry, Genuine Reason – HERE
  •  be 18 years or over
  • be viewed as a suitable person by the registrar• be able to prove his or her identity (Drivers licence or original birth certificate)
  • meet secure home storage and safety requirements for their firearm(s)
  • Provide proof of residency within the ACT
  • Complete and submit your ACT Firearms application along with proof of your certificate of attainment for your Safety Course.
  • Pay the fee for an ACT Firearms licence at any Access Canberra Shopfront online. Note: ACT Firearms Registry does not accept any payment.
